How do I apply for financial aid?

The financial aid application process is broken down into a number of steps depending on your eligibility for financial aid:

STEP 1: Determine your eligibility

The application process starts with you filling our financial calculator to provide us information about your family’s financial circumstances. We then use a standard method to assess your demonstrated financial need and determine your eligibility to apply for the ALU financial aid offerings.

Note: Please note that once you submit these details, you will not be able or allowed to make any changes to the information. Please ensure that the information you submit during your application is complete, accurate, and honest to the best of your knowledge, as you will be required to submit supporting documentation to verify the information provided. Also note that if the information provided is believed to be false or misleading, then the Financial Aid Office reserves the right to reject your application with no further reference to you and you’ll be disqualified for any other kind of financial aid.

Immediately after filling in the financial calculator, you will be informed of your eligibility for financial aid:

  • Grant Eligible

This means that you are eligible to apply for a specific ALU grant. You may now proceed to the next step of the grant application process.

  • Scholarship Eligible

This means that you are eligible to apply for the ALU scholarships. You may now proceed to the next step of the scholarship application process.

  • Financial aid Ineligible

This means that based on the information you provided on your family’s financial circumstances, you are not eligible to apply for financial aid.

STEP 2: APPLY for either a Grant or Scholarship

Both Grant eligible and Scholarship eligible students will get the opportunity to demonstrate their need for financial aid through answering a number of questions and providing an explanation of their financial circumstances. Applicants will also be required to submit supporting documentation for proof of financial circumstances and declared personal information.

Below is a breakdown of the sections to be completed in the financial aid application form;

a. Household livelihood and personal information

This section will ask you about you and your household so as to understand your financial standing. You would be asked to provide information about the possible sources of income, the total monthly income earned in your household and the kind of assets that your family owns. Personal information will also be required such as your humanitarian status and disability status if any.

b. Education financing history

This section will seek to find out how you were able to pay for your previous schooling and how much, whether high school or university.

c. Financial circumstances essay

In this section, you have an opportunity to tell us what you’d like to know about your financial circumstances and why you should receive the type of aid offering that you’re applying for.
